Das Dutchman Essenhaus
There is no better place to start your Amish Country experience in Elkhart County than at Das Dutchman Essenhaus.
Das Dutchman Essenhaus is a can’t-miss stop for the essential Amish Country experience.
It all begins with a feast of traditional family favorites, from fried chicken and mashed potatoes to roast beef and buttery egg noodles along with all the classic side dishes you would expect. As the largest restaurant in Indiana, the expansive dining room is filled with charming touches, including a cozy “buggy” where your party can dine. Finishing your meal with dessert is a must, with more than 30 varieties of pie baked fresh every day in Essenhaus’ bakery.
Essenhaus’ beautifully manicured campus offers even more to explore. When you’re finished browsing the bakery for take-home treats, wander over to the Village Shops. This collection of restored farm buildings featuring quilts, fabrics, home décor, games and unique gifts.
The grounds are a treat for leisurely stroll, with a gigantic Quilt Garden during the summer months, pleasingly winding paths, and even a carriage ride over a classic covered bridge. The bridge also serves as the transition to the nearby Pumpkinvine Nature Trail for a longer bike ride. On summer Thursday evenings, the grounds fill with classic cars and trucks for the weekly Cruise-In.
