You might say that Alan Ediger sees the world with an architectural eye.

But you might also wonder how that translates into his photography.

The Goshen man, the 2025 winner of the Well Crafted Elkhart County Merit Award at the annual Elkhart Juried Regional, says he likes to spend his free time outdoors. Whether it’s hiking or kayaking or birding (a new interest of his), Ediger says he is “kind of a visual person.”

“There’s a peaceful meditative quality to doing photography,” Ediger says.

Soon he was using his eye for design and his “different way of looking at the world” to capture his viewpoint on film (or pixels).

He joined The Photographers Guild in Goshen, finding fresh perspectives on how different photographers see the world.

Ediger started entering his work in the Elkhart Juried Regional, which he had never heard of until he joined the guild.

For the second year in a row, one of his photographs was accepted into the regional. And in October 2025, Ediger’s photograph, “Nasby Dam,” was recognized as the winner of the Well Crafted Elkhart County Merit Award. The award honors an emerging artist who lives in Elkhart County.

Ediger captured his image in the Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area, spurred on by a challenge issued by the guild for water photos.

You can see Ediger’s photo at the Midwest Museum of American Art through the end of December. The Elkhart Juried Regional annually recognizes the finest artworks in all mediums from northern Indiana and southern Michigan. This year’s show accepted about 180 pieces in every medium from painting and ceramics to sculpture and mixed media.
